Mr. Gary White was my favorite teacher of all time! He taught much more than how to sing...he taught me to believe in myself and be brave in the toughest of times. I saw him take students under his wings, who nothing more than a voice that they never found until they met Mr. White. He was truly extraordinary and touched so many lives. I often wondered where he was and how he was doing. I was so sad to hear of his passing, truly a loss beyond compare. He was so loved by his students, who also thought of Mr. White as a friend. You are and always will be missed. God Bless!

Mr. White was a gifted choir director, as well as mentor and friend to his students. I had the good fortune to be a member of choir and Ambassadors during my 4 years at Jacksonville High School while Mr. White was choir director. What fun we had thanks to his energetic teaching style! I think of him often, and credit him for my decision to attend Indiana University, a decision that has truly shaped shaped who I am and where I am in life today. I had other good teachers, but none who I remember with as much fondness and gratitude as Mr. Gary White. May he rest in peace (although I wouldn't be surprised to learn he's cooking up an amazing angelic choir trip).

Had the pleasure of knowing Mr. White at V.I.T. High School in Table Grove, Illinois. He was our band leader and was an excellent teacher and put on many SPECTACULAR band concerts while he was there. Have never seen anyone of that caliber since. We were very grateful to have had his talents to inspire many students!

Mr. White made such an impact on me as a high school student at Jacksonville High School in 1985-1987. He is one of the two teachers I talk about in my K- College years who made a difference to me -- not only academics but about LIFE. He gave us opportunities we never had before and taught me about effort, talent in many forms, open-mindedness, and humor and fun!
My deepest and most sincerest regrets on his passing.

To my exceptional and energetic grade and high school band teacher who brought me from saxophone to violin to oboe to bassoon from 1958 to 1962, putting Greenview on the “musical map” of Illinois. A real professional.
To my travel companion in a VW Beetle for a 10,000 mile tour of the West.
To my good friend and also a friend of my parents.
Thank you Gary for helping me to become an admirer of music and a responsible and respectful citizen.
Never to be forgotten.
May you rest in peace dear friend.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Mr. White was my high school choir director at Jacksonville High school for my sophomore through senior year of high school. I graduated in 1984. He taught me so much in music but mostly to feel the music. He was so passionate when teaching that it inspired me to do better. I was part of a family band and we sang gospel music but he pushed me out of my comfort zone to explore other types of music. I remember him encouraging me to sing Stormy Weather for a talent show. I went on to join other bands and enjoy singing and entertaining on stage still to this day. I credit a lot of my love of music to Mr. White. May he rest in peace and make beautiful music with the Angels in heaven!

Gary White impacted my life as a young man in ways I never had the chance to tell him. I have thought about trying to locate him for more than twenty years to let him know and I just never tried hard enough. It is too late which is a great lesson learned, but one that saddens me.
I spent 8 hours a day in his choir room before school, between classes, and after school to chase my dream and he pushed me, kicked my tail, and encouraged me diligently every step of the way.
I didn't come from a family that went to college, or had it top of mind for my future, so to want to go to school to be a voice major in a farming community didn't make much sense to my mom. In my senior year (1982) Mr. White helped me make the audition tape and fill out the application that got me accepted to California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles as a Voice Major. Without his help and encouragement I never would have had the guts to audition, let alone, move to Los Angeles.
Although I didn't end up going to CalArts, due to another offer with Ringling Bros., the confidence he instilled got me to move to LA after graduation in preparation to go to school. That confidence then enabled me to audition for Ringling Bros. Clown College and then to run off and join the circus and spend the next few years touring the country. Once done and back in LA I then auditioned and got cast in a ton of things due to Mr. White helping me to believe in myself and my abilities as a performer.
All of that was possible because this man believed in me more than I believed in myself. RIP Gary White. You impacted more lives than you could ever know.

Heartfelt condolences to Roger and other family members for your great loss. I also was one of Gary White’s first class of band students at V.I.T. high School. It was truly a privilege to have had him for an instructor, motivator, mentor, and friend. With his discipline and encouragement we were all given a special gift to reach for the highest goals, and with his help we discovered they could become reality, not only in music but life in general. At V.I.T. Our marching band was superb and our concert band was unparalleled. And all our productions were a joint effort of the band, school, parents, and the community as a whole. It was amazing to be a part of! It is quite humbling and appreciating to read all the condolences from all of the students and people whose lives he influenced during his lifetime. We are the lucky ones, and we truly do celebrate his life and what it meant for us.

Mr. White was my choir director and director of the Ambassadors when I was at Jacksonville High School.
My greatest memory is remembering how he invested in us kids. He could see behind the shy facade and bring out the power.
During a performance, he would be jumping all over the place and I think as kids we felt if he was going to get a sweat going, we better give it our all! The result was a fantastic performance!
He stepped in as a "father role" for my dear friend Mike and I could see great changes in him because of Mr. White. He mentored the rest of us and would accept nothing but the best from us.
Mr. White taught me about finding what is your gift from God and then giving it all you have!
My only hope is that he realizes how important he was to us at JHS. He changed lives and brought kids who were on the brink of really bad choices and re-focused them to music and boy did they flourish!
In life our, we can only hope to impact hearts like Mr. White did!
You will be missed!

I cannot even put into words what this man meant to me. I was so blessed to be in his choirs in Jacksonville from 1981-1986 when I graduated, the year he retired from teaching. It was his dedication and deep love for his students, the way he taught us about love and life, the way he encouraged us to FEEL everything that this beautiful world gives... and the inspiring way he showed us the infinite power and beauty of music, to lift the human spirit... those are just some of the reasons I decided, at the end of my sophomore year in high school, to become a high school choral director. I wanted to be Mr. White. I only later discovered that it was impossible - I could only be myself. But his example has always been a beacon for me-- I still feel his warmth and joy, and have tried to have just a fraction of the impact on my students that he had on us. Roger - please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you - this world has lost an angel... he's just back home where he belongs.

Mr. White came to Beardstown when I was in fifth grade. He took hold of a town, shook the hillbillies and rednecks by the shoulders, and virtually single handedly transformed a generation of students and their families into the most exceptional small school band in Illinois. You could say it was charisma, which it was, but mostly it was his ability to instill his students with the belief that they could do exactly what the exceptional music demanded. And we believed it! You might be fortunate enough to run across one such gifted educator, coach, or human being over the course of a lifetime, but most likely you won't be so fortunate. He changed the lives of a whole host of students. A gifted, brilliant man. Gone way to soon. And sorry to Roger and any other family for your loss. The irony of doing that magic in Beardstown of all places, will likely never happen again. Gary White had the gift!

Mr. White was one in a million. He did wonders for a small school and put on shows that few had seen. The parents worked hard and long to build scenery. He had a parents band that surprised every one. Only about three had ever played an instrument before but he had them play a concert in a few short weeks. It even made a national music magazine. I enjoyed every minute playing in it. Our daughter Cathy sang with the band, was a Bandette, and played the French Horn. A lot of great memories. Our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
