Calvin Ufheil

Obituary of Calvin Francis Ufheil

Calvin Francis Ufheil, 83, of Osage Beach, Mo., passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 at Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach. He was born Dec. 3, 1924 in Metamora, Ill., the second son of eight children born to William and Mary Ufheil. After hitchhiking to Florida for his senior year of high school and graduating from Sarasota High in 1942, Cal returned to Illinois and enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant and trained as a bombigator (bombardier/navigator) but never saw action in WWII because the war ended. Calvin was married to Jacklyn Yuvawn Johnson on Nov. 15, 1949. Many friends and family know Jacklyn as Bonnie (affectionately nicknamed as an infant). Cal and Bonnie chose the date of Nov. 15 to be married after discovering that coincidentally each of their parents were married on that date. This date has become a tradition of sorts in the Ufheil family with two of Cal and Bonnies children and a grandchild having also chosen it as their wedding date. Cal worked with his father and brothers shelling corn and trucking as William Ufheil and Sons. With the combine replacing the sheller, it became obvious that a new business venture was in order. Cal and Bonnie built and ran the Sauk Trail Inn, a successful restaurant and lounge with banquet facilities in their hometown of Annawan, Ill. They lived and raised their family there until 1979 when they sold Sauk Trail and moved to Lake of the Ozarks. They later purchased what became Tonka Hills Restaurant with their son Martin and wife, Julie, and ran it until 1993. Currently, Cal and Bonnie own Comfort Inn-Lake of the Ozarks with Marty and Julie, and the Econo Lodge-Lake of the Ozarks with daughter Lenore and son-in-law, Don Neuharth. Even more than his manicured lawn and daily USA Today with its crossword puzzle, Cal loved his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was affectionately known as Papa; so dubbed by his first grandchild. Cal was a quiet man with great strength and wisdom for his family whom he always put first. He enjoyed the Ozarks and the fall trees and was always looking forward to their next trip to the Smokies, Branson, Florida, etc. He loved to travel with Bonnie and/or his kids and grandkids and he left many memories for them to cherish. Cal will always be remembered with love and affection as the rock of his family. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Bonnie, of the home; three children, Martin Ufheil and wife Julie of Lake Ozark, Laurel Marks and husband Chris of Lake Ozark and Lenore Neuharth and husband Don of Camdenton; three sisters, Delores Uppy Bridges and husband Jay of Annawan, Marilyn Mick Nowers of Bloomington, Ill. and Sharon Humphrey and husband, Jerry, of Galva, Ill.; two brothers, Herbert Ufheil and wife, Joanne, of Annawan and Willis Ufheil of Annawan; grandchildren, Lucas Ufheil and wife Kathleen Ryan Ufheil, Zachary Ufheil and Megan Everhart, Army EOD Spc. Lyle Poss (serving in Iraq), Maria Collins, Lindsey Neuharth and Lee Neuharth; and great-grandchildren, William and Kayli Ufheil and Jaden, Dillon and Brailyn Collins. Cal was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Kenneth Ufheil and one sister, Ruth Peart.
