Obituary of Edward Charles Carpenter

Edward Charles �Ed� Carpenter, age 89, of Camdenton, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Camdenton Windsor Estates in Camdenton, Missouri. Ed was born March 5, 1923, the third child of Henry and Mary Carpenter in East St. Louis, Illinois. In June of 1941 Ed graduated from high school and on July 5, 1941 he went to work for S.W. Bell Telephone Co. as a station installer. In January 1943 he joined the Navy Seabees 84th Battalion serving in New Guinea and other South Pacific Islands, until World War II ended in September 1945. He was in the Philippines. He was discharged from the Navy in October 1945. Ed married his sweetheart, Doris Cleveland on December 19, 1945 and to this union four children were born; Frances, Leslie, Douglas, and Philip. He returned to work for S.W. Bell Telephone Co. and in 1969 transferred to Camdenton, Missouri, working as switchman until he retired in 1980 after 40 years of service. He took up wood-working and wood-carving and raised beef cattle on his farm in Climax Springs, Missouri. In 1992 he built a home and shop situated on 5 acres in Camdenton where his son-in-law Oscar Jones and daughter Frances live. Ed learned to play piano at the age of 80! (although he wasn�t very good at it) Ed is survived by his loving wife Doris of the home; two sons, Doug Carpenter and friend Helen of Belleville, Illinois and Phil Carpenter and wife Lisa of Camdenton, Missouri; one daughter Frances Jones and husband, Oscar, of Camdenton, Missouri; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; along with several other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; one sister; and his daughter Leslie Shroba.
