Obituary of Sumner R. Rhodes
Sumner (Sub) Rufus Rhodes, age 88, of Lake Ozark, Missouri, passed away December 27, 2013 at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach, Missouri.
Mr. Rhodes was born October 10, 1925 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Laura May and Thurman Rhodes. Sumner was united in marriage on February 13, 1950, to Clara Catherine Schleis and together they shared the past 63 years. Clara passed away on July 10, 2013. Sub is survived by their children Sandra and husband Greg West, Tim Rhodes, Cindy Broswell and Roger and his wife Kristin Rhodes.
He is survived by his brother Thurman Jr. Rhodes and wife Pauline of Conway, Arkansas. Seven grandchildren Nicholas Broswell, Jennifer Ayers, Megan Ballweber, Krystal Scott, Kimberly Broswell, Alexis Rhodes and Haley Rhodes; and three great grandchildren: Lauren, Shelby and Lillian Broswell.
Sumner served his country proudly in the US Army. He then went on to civil engineering and built roads and airports in Guam. Soon after Sub and Clara�s marriage they owned a service station in Hollywood, California. He also worked for Quaker State Motor Oil Corporation and also sponsored rails and funny cars for Quaker State. He then ran the State Capital restaurant in Lincoln, Nebraska. They had come to Lake Ozark on vacations and fell in love with the area. He opened a restaurant called Humphrey�s Gumphrey on the Lake Ozark Bagnell Dam Strip. He loved to visit with people; he had a gift of gab and always had a story to tell. Sub loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was such a loving man and will be deeply missed by all.
