Obituary of Lawrence E. McCurry

Lawrence E. (Larry) McCurry, age 75, of Sunrise Beach, Missouri, departed this life on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Lake Regional Health System, Osage Beach, Missouri, from complications due to a stroke. Larry was born October 30, 1938 in Hutchinson, Kansas. Larry served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves from 1958 through 1963. Larry was a 45 year retiree of the Dillons Food Store chain, and was proud to serve as Store Manager in Sterling, Kansas; Great Bend, Kansas; Manhattan, Kansas; and Junction City, Kansas. While retired, he was employed by Big Thunder Marina, Sunrise Ace Hardware in Sunrise Beach, and Hermans Lumber in Greenview. Larry was an avid member of the Rodders Association. Larry is survived by his wife, Sherry of the home; four children; Pamela Russell (Cathy) of Manhattan, KS, Steve Weis (Chris) of Gilroy, CA, Brett Weis (Sarah) of Salina, KS and Sara Ward of Elkhorn, NE; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-children; along with many other relatives and friends. Larry was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lisa. Larry loved life, his family and friends, and his Sparky dog. Always ready with a big, toothsome smile, he never met a stranger he didnt like. He may not remember their name, but he could tell you what they drove. He was known around the neighborhood as Speedo-Larry because of his preferred style of dress. He was very proud of the things that were his, and was a big storyteller. He was consistently there when someone needed help, and always tried to foresee what was going to happen in the future. He was a sentimental man as well, and cried easily about the trials of life and its inevitable tribulations. I truly believe that he knows we are doing the same in his memory. -Sherry McCurry
