Obituary of Edward F. Urbanek

Edward F. Urbanek, son of Mary Murphy Urbanek and Edward J. Urbanek was born February 9, 1924 in Ohio. He departed this life Saturday, July 12, 2014 at his home in Osage Beach, Missouri. Edward was 90 years, 5 months and 3 days old. From 1930-1938, Edward attended first through eighth grades at St. Vincent DePaul. He went on to attend high school at John Marshall. In March of 1942, Edward enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was stationed in New York, where he completed basic training, then Massachusetts, Connecticut and Washington. Edward earned the rank of Apprentice Seaman Shore Patrol. While attending school in Massachusetts, Edward became a First Class Radar Seaman, and also earned the status of Second Class Seaman. While in Washington, he served as a Sonar Third Class Petty Officer, and a Duty Recruiting Officer. While stationed in Connecticut, he was assigned to the USS McLane at which time Edward attended submarine detection school. During his Coast Guard career, Edward toured Alaska as well as the Alucian Islands. He was credited for sinking a Japanese submarine. In 1946, Edward returned to Cleveland, Ohio and received an honorable discharge. Edward began his next career as an apprentice plumber. He earned .50 cents an hour as an apprentice. After three years he graduated, earning a journeyman�s card and in 1951 began working for Reliance Heating & Cooling. He also took a second job as a police officer with the Parma Heights Police Department. In 1960 Edward assumed a position and moved through the ranks at Smith & Oby and retired in 1986. From 1987-1992, Edward served as the Parma Heights Building Inspector. He was a proud member of the Local 55 for 64 years. In 1948 Edward married Lenore Tresise and through their union conceived five children: Edward, Terrance, Jacqueline, Thomas and James. Lenore passed away in 1988. On August 26, 1989, Edward married Maralyn Allen and became the step-father of Rhonda Trasen and Donnie Allen. Edward was blessed with twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.He loved boating, fishing, traveling and fast cars. In his early years Edward raced cars and earned several trophies.He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Camdenton, Missouri. Edward was a loving husband, father, brother and friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Maralyn; two sisters; six children; twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
