Dan Stone

Obituary of Dan Stone

Dan went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 26, 2014, at Lake Regional Health System. He was 80 years old. Dan was born July 9, 1934, in Stockton, California, the son of Jack D. Stone and Leona M. (Dye) Stone. During his high school years, Dan was a member of DeMolay, the Troubadours, the Boy Scouts, Key Club, and Vice President of the Student Body. After high school, he attended and graduated in 1956 from College of Pacific, now called University of the Pacific. He was a member of the volleyball team, swim team, and cheerleading squad. Dan was also very involved in his car club, called the 36 Club, the CVAC (Central Valley Auto Club), and was a charter member of the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association). After completing college, he was drafted into the Army, and stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. While there, he met and fell in love with Carol Wood, who was managing a military supply store in Waynesville, Missouri. In 1956, after his service in the military ended, he returned to his home in California. After many phone calls and letters, Dan invited Carol to meet his family and friends. While in California, they became engaged, and were married December 1, 1956 in Waynesville. They returned to Stockton where they made their home for the next five years. Dan worked for Union Oil Company, and Carol worked for a medical doctor. After spending the weekends exploring California and working together at the Kingdom Drag Strip, they decided it was time to start a family. Patricia Jane (Patti) was born on December 28, 1960. After their first visit back to Missouri, Dan decided Missouri was where he wanted to raise his family. They settled in Waynesville for a short time where he accepted Christ as his personal savior and was baptized and joined the First Baptist Church. Shortly thereafter, Dan was offered an agency with State Farm Insurance, and in May of 1963, Dan, Carol and Patti moved to Camdenton, Missouri. They welcomed Nancy Jo into the family on September 9, 1963. After 36 years, of what he considered the best job ever, he retired in 1999. Through these years, Dan was a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Camdenton, a beloved teenage Sunday school teacher, a charter and active member of the Optimist Club, a charter member of the Lake Valley Country Club, and was very active in his community. He also served on various committees and boards. Dan was a self-admitted bad golfer, but loved the game, and hanging out with his golfing buddies. He loved NASCAR Racing and Jeff Gordon, the San Francisco 49ers, the Missouri Tigers, fishing, hunting, reading, and working out at Lake Regionals Cardiac Rehab, where the amazing staff saved his life on multiple occasions! Dan was loved by many, and will be remembered for his generosity, loyalty, honesty, and unconditional love for others. His smile, humor, positive attitude, kind heart, and gentle spirit, will stay with his family and friends forever. Dan wanted to express his gratitude to all family members, many close friends, former policyholders and staff, his devoted doctors and nurses, the staff at Cardiac Rehab, and the staff at Wal-Mart Pharmacy in Camdenton. Dan was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, and uncle. He was an only child with a small family and considered Carols family his own. He deeply loved each and every one of them. Dan is survived by his wife and best friend of 58 years, Carol of the home, his two beloved daughters, Patti Stone, her husband Shannon Scrivner, and his two sons, Tyler and Dacodah of Raymore, Missouri, and Nancy Jo Stone of Camdenton; his niece Janita Hulett, her husband Ray, their sons Shane, his wife Marcy, and their children, Courtney Hulett, his wife Jessica, and their children, all of Camdenton. He is also survived by his newphew Allen Wood, his wife Brenda, and their daughter of Waynesville, Missouri, Sarah Wood Terry, her husband Heath, and their son Samson, of Lebanon, Missouri, a sister-in-law, Lita Wood of Waynesville, Missouri, two cousins Len Harrington, of Woodbridge, California, and Jim Churchill of Hillsboro, Oregon, Helen Cliburn, Ken Cliburn, David Cliburn, Jon Cliburn, Ronda Knight, Barbara Heinrich, and their families. Dan was preceded in death by his mother and father, Jack and Leona Stone, aunts, uncles, several cousins, Carols parents, Jesse and Dorothy Wood, brother-in-laws, J.D. Wood, his wife Nathalee, Samuel Joseph Wood, nephew James Cliburn, sister-in-law Juanita Wood Cliburn and husband B.H. Cliburn, and a grandnephew Samuel J. Terry. It was Dans desire to not have a formal service, to be cremated, and remembered without too much sadness, but with joy that God has called him home. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverb 3:5-6
