Susan Scoyk

Obituary of Susan Van Scoyk

Susan (Suzy) Van Scoyk died on February 5, 2015 at the Camdenton Windsor Estates. Suzy was born to Manuel and Ida Slawin on May 14, 1940. She will always be remembered for her warmth and wit. She was a beloved mother, aunt, sister, cousin, grandmother, and friend, as well as the lifelong sweetheart of her husband, the late Clark Van Scoyk. Known for her devotion to art and teaching, Suzy inspired many to appreciate the inherent beauty in nature, and never missed the chance to encourage others to pick up a paintbrush or fashion a collage. She trained in art at Washington University in St. Louis, stopped to raise her family, finished her initial degree at Maryville University, and went on to complete an MFA at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. She motivated creativity in many, both young and old. She sparked interests in the children at nursery schools in Camdenton and St. Louis, the students at Lewis & Clark Community College, and even the seniors at the Ozark Care Center. Her own art work won many awards and adorns the homes of friends and family. She treasured her children, Mitch Earleywine, Joe Earleywine, and Tammy Martin as well as her grandchildren, Nicholas Martin, Sarah Martin, Dahlia Earleywine, and Maya Earleywine. She always expressed abiding love for her brothers, Tom Slawin and the late Ed (Chuck) Slawin. She took special delight in her close-knit collection of cousins, and cherished her nieces and nephews. She loved deeply and relished the thought of anyone enjoying her company. She will be missed.
