Obituary of Verl Fern McGrew

Verl Fern McGrew, age 95, passed away Monday, January 2, 2017, at Lakeside Meadows in Osage Beach, Missouri. Fern is the daughter of Christian and Flossie (Border) Gahring, born July 28, 1921 in Marengo, Iowa. On August 17, 1941 Fern was united in marriage to Donald T McGrew in Kirksville, Missouri. Donald preceded her in death November, 1998. They had shared 56 1/2 wonderful years of marriage at the time of his death. Fern was a loving and devoted wife and helpmate to her husband, and a caring mother and grandmother to her children and their families. She loved sewing and passed on that love as she taught sewing classes at a Singer store She enjoyed reading, playing cards, and cooking, but her greatest joy was being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fern was a member of Harper Chapel United Methodist Church in Osage Beach, Missouri. Fern is survived by her children, Carol Wheeler and husband, Harold, of Osage Beach, Missouri, Kathy Norman and husband of Steve, Gerald , Illinois, Connie McGrew of Osage Beach, Missouri and Kristi McGrew (Tommy Ward) of Camdenton, Missouri; her sisters-in-law, Alice Gahring of Newton, Iowa and Muriel Schellenberger of Colorado; six grandchildren and nine great -grandchildren. Fern is preceded in death by her parents Christian and Flossie Gahring; her husband Don; her son Ronald; and two brothers, Billy Gahring and Merlyn Gahring. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Harper Chapel United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Thursday, January 5, 2017, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Hedges-Scott Funeral Home in Osage Beach, Missouri. Services will be held at Harper Chapel United Methodist Church on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Osage Beach.
