Please accept our sincere condolences on the death of Frank. Frank brought my wife Alfreda and our boys, John and Rick, to Manhattan in 1977 when he offered me a job teaching manufacturing in the Industrial Engineering Department at KSU. It was a good move. I had taught for 10 years in the Process Engineering Department at General Motors Institute in Flint Michigan. I especially liked teaching in the new Durland Hall as Frank had wheeled and dealed to get surplus basic machine tools from the Department of Defense so the lab was well equipped. I was in charge of both the lecture and lab and the student semester project was much better than the projects we had at General Motors Institute. At KSU each student cast and machined to size and shape an aluminum vise. Most students were so proud of their vise that they would display them on their desks after graduation from Engineering. The plans for the vise were drawn up in 1944 and Timothy Deines continues the same vise project today.
Frank was a mentor and he and Barb became good friends with Alfreda and myself. I remember having enjoyable coffee discussions in the I.E. faculty room with Frank, Dean Rathbone, Ken Gowdy, John Dollar and whoever else they could garner. We have all missed Frank and Barb since they moved to Missouri. We get occasional updates from his daughter Deedee when she visits the Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering Department. We wish Barb and the family many good years to come.

Sad to hear about the passing of Dr. Tillman. I first met him way back in the fall of 1977 as a entering graduate student in Industrial Engineering. I was immediately impressed by his professional manner and how friendly he was with the students. He will be sorely missed.

My deepest sympathies. Dr. Tillman was an amazing influence in my life. He was the head of the IE Department during my six years of college. I earned my BSIE in 1983, and my MSIE in 1985. I was fortunate to have his steady advice and guiding hand throughout those years. His smile was alway contagious. Godspeed, Frank.

Frank was certainly an outstanding faculty member and department head in the KSU College of Engineering. Following his departure from the Department of Industrial Engineering, the impact of his work and relationships has continued to reverberate through the faculty, students and graduates of the department. And his name will be long remembered and honored there.
He was also one of my best friends and I have many fond memories of sharing coffee time with him during work breaks on campus or early morning group meetings at McDonald’s in West Loop where the discussions ranged over a wide variety of topics. You could always count on Frank to contribute with interesting ideas and comments.
At other times over many years, we spent the noon hour at the Fieldhouse playing half-court basketball with other faculty members or athletic coaches. Frank was a great competitor and a “deadly shooter” from the corner! And for several years, he was the organizer and coach of an outstanding faculty team from the College of Engineering – it was Great Fun!
And so, I’m just one of many Manhattan friends of Frank who have a great appreciation for his friendship and his contributions to KSU and the community of Manhattan. And we will continue to enjoy our memories of him.
I wish that I could have traveled to Missouri for the funeral service and to visit with Barb and the family, but old age and poor health have been the deciding factors.
Peace and Love,
Ken Gowdy

He is Gone
You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday
You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

My heart goes out to the Tillman family and I wish you comfort and peace as you deal with your loss. Frank was the reason I came back to Kansas State in 1969 as an IE. I had failed out of college my freshman year, went into the Air Force for 4 years, and needed help getting back on a career path. Frank provided that for me. As I overcame my early academic challenges, he provided me support and encouragement. After graduating and moving to Texas Instruments, I began recruiting engineers for TI and Kansas State was my assigned school. Frank provided me guidance and a healthy list of IE students to talk to. Going through this process with Frank, I realized that he must have done the same thing for the recruiter that interviewed me, so he was not only instrumental in educating me but also in landing my first job. Frank Tillman was a larger than life figure in my life, a presence whenever he entered the room or conversation. I celebrate his life, even as I mourn his passing.

Barbara and the Tillman family:
I am so sorry for your loss. Frank was such a special person who touched so many lives. He lived life to the fullest and on his own terms.
I remember first meeting Frank in December of 1969 when I was returning to Kansas State to start a masters degree in Industrial Engineering. Frank was my major professor but he was more than that... I always felt I could sit with Frank and talk about a broad range of topics and he always was never shy about sharing his opinion. If I have had any success in my career, I can always look back at the coaching and guidance that Frank gave. After graduating, Frank was always a help, giving me a heads up on "here are the kids you need to talk to". Frank achieved so much in his life on so many fronts... from the youngest department head and building the IE curriculum, to real estate development, to his consulting company but his achievements go beyond those successes. Look at all of the successful students that Frank made a real impact on. Knowing Frank, I think he would say he was proudest of his family. May Frank rest in peace that he so deserves.

Barbara & Family,
I was sad to learn of Frank's passing last Saturday. I lost a good friend in Frank. Barbara, the two of you were both dear friends. Thank you for that. I first met Dr. Tillman 40 years ago in 1977 when I transferred to K-State. I liked Frank immediately. He also gave me a $500 scholarship! Frank is the reason I studied IE and I owe much of my success to Frank. Two years later, in 1979, I was considering leaving IE and transferring to ME, but Frank convinced me to stay in the department by letting me take graduate level courses for undergraduate credit. Net, Frank is the reason I remained in IE and (once again) I owe much of my success to him. Another three years later, in 1982, Steve Johnson called Frank looking for someone a few years out of college to join him at Frito-Lay. I was working for John Deere in Iowa at the time. Frank told Steve I might be a fit. I subsequently joined Frito-Lay and spent 10 wonderful years there. So, Frank is the reason I met Steve and landed at Frito-Lay … and I owe much of my success to him for that. As you know, over the years I spent a fair amount of time meeting with and learning from Frank. He was one of my mentors. He was always willing to share … his time, his experience, and especially his opinions. He was smart, hard working, and had a wealth of experiences that he willingly shared with me. He also had a pretty good memory. I never spent time with Frank without learning a thing or two from him. Thank you Frank! He was larger than life, wasn’t he? He was also very proud of his family ... of each and every one of you. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren at your Lake of the Ozarks retreat. Yes, he will be missed by many. Frank, I miss you already! Thank you for being in my life.
