Obituary of Laureita Jewell Hicks

LAUREITA JEWELL HICKS

Laureita Jewell Hicks, age 81, of Kansas City, Missouri, died peacefully on Monday, September 25, 2017 at her home in Kansas City while holding the hands of her daughters.

Laureita was born September 12, 1936 in Green Ridge, Missouri, daughter of Hoyt and Jewell (Nations) Seaton.

Laureita was united in marriage on April 3, 1954 in Red Top, Missouri to George Hicks, and together they shared 59 years of marriage until George’s death.

Laureita worked for Sears in Kansas City prior to the birth of her daughters.  Once they were born, her main focus was on raising them.  She was a loving and devoted Mom with a passion for making sure her kids knew how to behave, how to treat others, and right from wrong.  She told them every day that she loved them.  Laureita was their “room mother” and “picture lady” at school, active in the PTA, supervised children in the lunchroom where many referred to her as “Mom”, and a Girl Scout Brownie leader.  Laureita enjoyed camping, boating, and water skiing.  After her daughters were older, she had a job she enjoyed at Purcell Drug in Oak Grove.  Later in life, she enjoyed reading, cheering on the Kansas City Royals, and spending time with friends and family, particularly her granddaughter and great-granddaughter, who were both the joy of her life and to whom she was known as “Grammie”

Laureita is survived and will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Gloria Hicks (Jeff) and Brenda McCracken; her granddaughter, Kelsey McCracken, referred to as “My Special”; her precious great-granddaughter Mila; and her brother Bob Seaton (Helen), as well as nieces, nephews, and friends.

Laureita was preceded in death by her husband George, her brother Bill Seaton, and her parents.

Visitation will be Monday, October 2, 2017 from 1:00-2:30 pm at Hedges-Scott Funeral Home, Macks Creek, Missouri.

Services will be held Monday, October 2, 2017 at 3:00pm at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Macks Creek, Missouri. 

Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Macks Creek, Missouri.
