Obituary of Richard Allan Johnson

Richard Allan Johnson, better known to the world as Bumper, was born on May 8, 1940. He was born in Chicago to his parents Mildred and Henning S. Johnson. On October 3, 2018, at the age of 78 years, he peacefully passed away at Lake Regional Hospital after a three-month battle with lung cancer. His loving wife of 27 years, Rose Johnson, was at his side the entire time.

Bumper grew up on the southside of Chicago, where he became an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and the Chicago White Sox. At the age of 22, Bumper enlisted in the United States Army in September of 1962, where he served his country from the shores of Germany. After an honorable discharge in October 1969, he returned to Chicago where he became a Chicago Police officer. Bumper committed to his role of serve and protect for 27 years, and eventually retired in 1997.

After his retirement, Bumper and his wife, Rose, moved to Sunrise Beach, Missouri in June 1997. Although, the term retirement didn’t mean much to Bumper, as he built a life at the Ozarks full of commitment to various organizations which he loved dearly. He was a dedicated 20-year member, and former Division Commander, of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a respected member of the American Legion for 31 years. Bumper also was an active member of the Elks Club located in Laurie.

In his spare time, Bumper enjoyed fishing, driving boats, cutting the grass, finding a good sale, watching (and often correctly guessing the puzzles) on Wheel of Fortune, playing Christmas games, and more than anything, spending time with his wife and grandkids.

Survivors include his wife Rose Johnson and four step-children: Angie Wychesit, Birdie Freeman, Leon Wychesit, and Loren Wychesit; six grandchildren Melissa Wychesit, Daniel Wychesit, Angelee Feltner, Keith Freeman, Kyle Freeman, and Liz Peinado; three great-grandchildren Emmalee Wychesit, Nathan Romo, and Amelia Romo. Bumper is also survived by his sister Gloria Seiler and her husband Tom, their two sons Scott T.  and Daniel J. Seiler.

Bumper will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, dedication to his country and community, and love for his family. He will be greatly missed by all, but we rejoice in knowing he is at peace and safe with our heavenly Father in heaven. 

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 12:00 (noon) p.m. at the Zack Wheat American Legion Post 624, Sunrise Beach, Missouri. A luncheon will follow. Please bring a covered dish. The meat is being provided.
