Obituary of Mary Carolyn DeWitt Smith
Mary Carolyn DeWitt Smith, age 79 of Foxwood Springs, Raymore, Missouri, formerly of Osage Beach, Missouri, passed away peacefully to be with Christ, with her family by her side, on Friday, December 28, 2018, at Foxwood Springs in Raymore, Missouri. Mary was born in Beaman, Missouri to John Roy DeWitt and Zula Maude Shaw DeWitt on May, 18, 1939. Mary grew up in Sedalia, Missouri along with her brother and three sisters. Mary was baptized at the Sedalia Baptist Church at an early age. Mary was united in marriage to Howard Wayne Smith of Kansas City, MO on August 25, 1956 in Sedalia, Missouri. They made their first home in Chula Vista, CA where their first son, Brian, was born. Mary and Howard returned to Missouri in 1959 and three more boys were added to their union; Ryan, Bret and Michael. They raised their boys in Belton, Missouri before moving to Ballard, Missouri in 1973. Each son enlisted in the Marine Corps upon graduation from High School. Mary was a wife and mom and took great pride in her family, was very patriotic and proud of their service to our country.
Mary was employed outside of the home while living in Ballard, Missouri; she worked at Adrian Meat Locker, The Medical Lodge Nursing Home, and Country Mart Grocery Store. Upon leaving Ballard, Missouri they lived in Harrison Arkansas and then Coon Rapids, Minnesota following Howard’s line of work / truck driving. While in Coon Rapids; Mary worked as a vendor providing samples of new product in a local grocery store. Once retiring they moved to Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri for a short while and then moved to Fort Myers, Florida to help with care of Mary’s mother and partnered with Mary’s Sister, Betty and her husband, Ralph to assist with a small lawn care service for local residents. Following their stay in Florida, Mary and Howard, moved back to Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri where they decided to join a long haul company by providing delivery service of recreational trailers. During their employment, Hurricane Katrina hit Florida and Louisiana and Howard and Mary delivered many FEMA trailers to those areas. Mary and Howard retired from the long haul business when Howard became ill. Mary is preceded in death by both her parents, her loving husband Howard of 56 years, her sisters Blanche Miller & Lou Godbey and her youngest son, Michael.
Mary loved fishing, reading books, watching the wildlife around the lake, travel, friends and her family. Dad was the love of her life and her boys and families were often the subject of conversation.
Mary moved to Foxwood Springs Assisted Living Facility in Raymore, Missouri in April of 2017. While there she made many friends and enjoyed interacting with not only her fellow residents at the facility but also the entire staff at Foxwood. She leaves behind her sons and daughters-in-law: Brian and Elyse Smith of Raymore, Missouri, Ryan and Melody Smith of Lamar, Missouri, Bret and Lisa Smith of Acampo, California. She also leaves behind grandchildren: Kyle and Lacy Smith, Amber Smith, Megan Smith, Eric and Amanda Smith, Caleb and Falynne Smith, Jacob and Kelsey Wieland, Renee Langlois and Jessica Smith, as well as, Great-Grandchildren; Gracie, Paisley, and Bailey Smith, Owen, Brayden and Maddyn Moore, Bryce and Kennedy Smith, J’vion Green and her siblings John DeWitt and wife Joyce of Pleasanton, California and Betty McClain and husband, Ralph of Fort Myers and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, January 4, 2019 at Hedges-Scott Funeral Home, Osage Beach, Missouri.
