Dovie Johnson

Obituary of Dovie Pauline Johnson

Dovie Pauline Johnson, age 92, of Macks Creek, Missouri passed away Sunday, January 5, 2020 at the Osage Beach Rehabilitaiton and Healthcare Center in Osage Beach, Missouri. Dovie was born February 19, 1927 in Macks Creek, Missouri, the daughter of Charles and Sarah (Willis) Hicks. Dovie married her high school sweetheart Vernon in 1946, after he returned home from serving in the Army during World War II. They shared 68 loving years together. They moved to Kansas City where Vernon worked for the Gas Service Company and Dovie was a stay at home mom raising their two sons. She was involved in their sons’ activities and became an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Independence. When Vernon retired in 1986, they moved to Branch, Missouri. She was sad to leave friends and her church but was determined she would adjust to a new lifestyle in the country. Dovie enjoyed making handmade quilts and crafts, flower arranging, cooking/baking, canning vegetables (from the garden Vernon always put out), and reading. She was a longtime member of the Branch Homemakers Club. Spending time with family and friends was the joy of her life, especially with her two granddaughters, who came often to visit from Oklahoma. In recent years Dovie would travel to Tulsa to visit her family and three young great grandchildren. Dovie loved the Lord, her church, her family and friends and had so many happy memories over her 92 years of living. She and Vernon loved to tease and be teased, and both had a wonderful sense of humor. Although her life changed when Vernon passed away in 2015, she never ceased in giving of herself to others. When she moved to assisted living in 2017 on Valentines’ Day, she continued to have a sunny outlook on life and would say “I miss my home, but I am content”. Her two sons came often to visit her, taking her shopping, or to church. She is finally reunited with the love of her life and other family members she missed so much. Dovie’s life was a life well lived and she is wonderful example of LOVE! Dovie is survived by her sons: Larry Johnson and wife Deborah of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Garry Johnson , of Raytown, Missouri; her grandchildren, Sarah Christian and Ashley Shelley; her great grandchildren, Ryder Christian, Callie Christian, and Drake Shelley; and her brother, Clonnie Hicks, of Buffalo, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Johnson, parents, Charles and Sarah Hicks ,brothers, Don Hicks and Lonnie Hicks, sisters, Bonnie McClanahan and Burla Gray, half brothers, Ray Eidson, Charley Eidson and Frank Eidson, and half sister Lona Ricker. The family will welcome friends for visitation from 6:00-8:00 pm, Friday, January 10, 2020, at Hedges-Scott Funeral Home in Macks Creek, Missouri.
