Obituary of Orvalyn F. Houghton

Orvalyn F. Houghton, age 93, formerly of Osage Beach, Missouri, died Sunday afternoon, August 16, 2020 at St. Camillus in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin near the home of her daughter and son-in-law. Born near Monett, Missouri on October 22, 1926, Orvalyn (Orvie) was the daughter of the late Ina O. (Medlin) Burns and Orville Lynn Burns. She graduated from Washington University School of Nursing in 1947 as a Registered Nurse, and was a member of the Army Cadet Nurse Corps. Orvie married her husband, Clark Ferguson Houghton, in St. Louis, Missouri on September 2, 1950. In 1961, they moved to Eldon, Missouri upon purchasing Mid- Missouri Oil Company, which later included the Jiffy Stop Food Marts. They owned and operated the business for 35 years. A dedicated volunteer with the Lake of the Ozarks General Hospital Auxiliary, Orvie especially enjoyed her time working in the gift shop where she designed silk flower arrangements for sale. She was an excellent seamstress creating clothes and home decor for her children and grandchildren, and was also an avid sports fan, faithfully watching and rooting for her beloved Missouri Tigers and favorite NASCAR drivers. Orvie is survived by her two children, Lynda Beth Sherer and her husband, Randall, of Greenfield, Wisconsin; Keith Clark Houghton and his wife, Vicki, of St. Louis, Missouri; four grandchildren: DeAnna Lynn Sherer, Veronica Lynn Brown and her husband, David, Jeffrey Keith Houghton, and Jennifer Marie Houghton; a dear cousin Dr. David Houghton, his wife Trisha and their children: Mark, Beth and Daniel; along with several other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years of marriage, Clark Ferguson Houghton, and her parents, Ina O. (Medlin) and Orville Lynn Burns. An interment ceremony will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Osage Beach, Missouri. Per her family’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice in Orvie’s name.
