Obituary of Alfred Lee Garrison

Alfred Lee Garrison,  age 94,  was born November 6, 1928 in Versailles, Missouri, and died peacefully in his sleep, Saturday, January 21, 2023.  His parents were Jesse Iven Garrison and Ruby (Morris) Garrison.  He was the second of three brothers, Jesse Carl “JC” Garrison and Robert Garrison.

Alfred or “Mert” as he was known to family and friends, grew up in Versailles in the West Lawn neighborhood.  In high school Mert participated in sports and numerous academic endeavors.  He served in the US Army stateside, from 1948-1952.  He earned his accounting degree from University of Missouri, Columbia, and worked most of his accounting career as an auditor with the State Department in Washington DC.  After retiring from the government, he had a CPA practice in northern Virginia.

He met and married his beloved wife of 56 years, Ruby Corum of Virginia.   They had one son together, Alfred Lee Garrison, II.  In 2005, they relocated to Lake of the Ozarks, and following Ruby’s death, Mert returned to his boyhood hometown, Versailles.   During his tenure with the State Department, Mert traveled the world, but always made time to come for treasured visits with his family back home in Missouri.

Mert enjoyed playing bridge with his buddies and a good glass of wine.  He was quick witted and had a dry sense of humor that kept his company on their toes.  He was saved by grace, and in recent months, spoke of his relationship with Jesus.   His family and friends will miss his presence and cherish his memory.

Mert is survived by his son, Alfred Lee Garrison, II and wife, Becky, of Kansas City, Missouri; his brother, Robert E. Garrison and wife, Betty, of Versailles, Missouri; his sister-in-law, Mary Garrison of Versailles, Missouri; several nieces, nephews and their families; along with a host of other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby; his parents, Jesse and Ruby Garrison; his brother JC Garrison; and his sister-in-law, Nell Garrison.

Private family services will be held at a later date.
