Obituary of Byron "Barney" Purvis Summers

Byron “Barney” Purvis Summers, age 103, of Camdenton, Missouri, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2023, at University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, Missouri.  Born in Downs, Illinois, November 3, 1919, he was the son of Kenneth and Martha (Collier) Summers.

 

Barney proudly served 21 years in the Medical Services Corps with the US Army. During the war, Barney was a combat medic and the assistant surgeon to the 86th regiment of the 10th Mountain Division. He retired in 1957, with the rank of Major.  Barney was an avid outdoorsman who loved spending his days hunting and fishing.   Among his many accomplishments, his family was his true pride and joy.

 

Barney is survived by his son, James "Mike" Summers and wife, Barbara, of Parker, Colorado; his daughter, Redith DeBolt and husband, Wesley, of Haggerstown, Indiana; along with seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Martha Summers; his wife, Rosa; his daughter, Darlene Jeffers; his brother, William Summers; and two sisters, Theda Gabbert and Dorothy Wilson.

 

We honor and celebrate a life well lived, and will cherish the legacy of his service to our country.

 

Services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, February 24, 2023 at Hedges-Scott Funeral Home in Camdenton, Missouri.

The family will welcome friends for visitaiton from 10:00-11:00 am, prior to services at the funeral home.

 

Graveside Services with full military honors will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, February 24, 2023 at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Missouri.
