Obituary of Sharon Lynne Nieters
Sharon Lynne (Abbott) Nieters, age 83, passed away suddenly and peacefully on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at the place she loved most, her second home in the Lake of the Ozarks.
Sharon was born on New Year’s Eve in 1939 in Vienna IL to Jay Abbott and Geneva (Clark) Abbott. She grew up mostly in St. Louis, and after graduating from Maplewood High School, she married James (Jim) Harold Nieters of St. Louis. In no time, they filled their home with four of the most intelligent, loving, steadfast and witty hooligans to ever conquer South St. Louis County. Throughout their marriage, Sharon and Jim’s focus was on generating endless chore lists and setting towering expectations intended to keep their children out of trouble and harm. They were loved for supplying the neighborhood children with Pixie Stix and the parents of said children with conversation and cocktails.
Following her husband’s passing in 1996, Sharon honored his instructions to sell their lake house by instead tripling its size, thereby creating a gathering place and eternal soiree for her ever-growing family and circle of friends. Sharon loved animals, both wild and domesticated, holiday gatherings filled with laughter, and all things purple and teal. She was up for an adventure, never turned down a hug, a friend in need or a rum and coke. She was happiest at her beloved lake house either alone or among a throng of unruly merrymakers. Sharon’s smile was as warm as her embrace, and she loved everyone without judgment or expectation. Her sweet disposition touched everyone she met. She was simultaneously our rock and our soft place to land, and she will be ferociously missed.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Abbott (brother), Terry (Abbott) Collum (sister), Jim Nieters (husband), and their baby daughter, Marci.
She is survived by her children Joe (Gayle) Nieters, Jami (Nieters) Marsoun, Jim (Tracey) Nieters, and Matt (Tiffany) Nieters; her grandchildren Lindsey (David) Russo, Ryan (Mary Noce) Nieters, Emma Marsoun, and Evan (Grace) Nieters; her great grandchildren Kylie, Elena, Roman, Treyston, and Flora; and a plethora of beloved nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, cousins and friends.
A celebration of Sharon’s life will be held on Saturday, October 7, 1:00-5:00 PM, at the Elks Lodge at 2726 Oakville Elks Ln, Saint Louis, MO 63129, with a semi-formal singing of her praises and telling tales of grandeur at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Helping Strays of Monroe County, IL at helpingstrays.org, 618-939-7389.
