Having returned to civilization last night, from an extended vacation, I was of course very saddened, both for the news of Ron's passing and also for the lost opportunity to join in the celebration of his life.
However, I will cherish the time I was able to reconnect with Ron and Ginger, two years ago in Clayton. This was during his, as he defined, 15 bonus years. For me, of course, it was a bonus simply to be able to reconnect and recollect with him. While he was younger, by a decade or two, than the popularly defined, “Greatest Generation”, he embodied the same spirit, joy and positive thinking that brought him the success that so many of his peers also achieved – success in both family and business.
It was truly a magical time, which I was fortunate to witness. Ron's complete life encompassed much more than just business, but in business is where I observed him the most. My father's life would not have been the same without Ron. I could see Merton's eyes light up whenever Ron appeared. They accomplished so much, and had more fun than anyone could ever dream of. I am still in awe of the enthusiasm and optimism they continually projected, and Ron was clearly the significant catalyst. We can only hope and pray that succeeding generations will project that same joy and optimism in facing the challenges ahead. In addition to his wonderful humor he was a sensitive guy, and I surprised myself in shedding a tear with him as we reminisced on those amazing years when love, fun and success always seemed so easy. Thank you Ron for your spirit and thank you for showing me that with optimism and joy, all things are possible.
